Jasmine Hong

PhD Student

Jasmine completed her BSc in Chemistry with a concentration in Nanotechnology at Carleton University in June 2021. She spent 2 years working with Dr. Maria DeRosa where she investigated aptamer-based biosensors. In her final year, Jasmine completed her honours thesis with the DeRosa group where she synthesized gold/iron oxide Janus particles to study their ability to be conjugated with thiol-modified aptamer sequences. In addition to her work with the DeRosa group, Jasmine had the opportunity to work at Environment and Climate Change Canada for an 8-month internship under the supervision of Ben Fieldhouse. She studied the toxic effects of dispersant agents and their efficiency against crude oil.

Now Jasmine is a PhD student who is co-supervised Dr. Audrey Moores and Dr. Subhasis Ghoshal. She is investigating the mechanism of degradation of plastics under mechanical and environmental effects to enable further study of their chemistry, fate, and toxicity. In her free time, Jasmine enjoys baking and exploring museums.
