Sara Catingan

PhD Candidate

Sara obtained her BSc (Honours Specialization in Chemistry) at The University of Western Ontario in June 2020. She spent two years working on several projects under the supervision of Dr. Joe B. Gilroy. Her first project as an NSERC USRA summer student involved synthesizing formazanate complexes of main group elements. After receiving a second USRA, she fabricated thin film memory devices of stable radical polymers and studied their conductivity as part of a collaboration with the lab of Dr. Giovanni Fanchini. She spent her final year in the Gilroy group completing her honours thesis, where she investigated pathways towards the synthesis of planar boron difluoride hydrazone dimers. Sara also had the opportunity to complete a 12-month internship at Environment and Climate Change Canada under the supervision of Dr. Amila O. De Silva, where she researched emerging organic contaminants in aquatic environments across Canada. Sara began her PhD in September 2020 in the Moores group. She is interested in using gold nanorods as plasmonic nanosupports for photocatalysis in the far-red region.
